The track oened as a 1/2 mile dirt oval, operating from 1965 through April 6th, 1967, and again from September 30th, 1978 through 1987. It operated as a 1/2 mile paved oval from June 1968 through July 30th, 1978. The current 4/10 mile dirt oval opened in 1988, operating through 2000, reopening from 2003 through 2005, and reopening again for 2007.

The track has previously operated as Smoky Mountain Speedway, Smoky Mountain Race Track, Smoky Mountain Raceway and New Smoky Mountain Raceway.
