Note that the ownership of the oval and dragstrip were somewhat independent and mildly tangled until Bruton Smith purchased both properties in 1996.
The first practice at Bristol International Speedway was held on July 27, 1961. The first race was 3 days later. The track was originally 1/2 mile with 22 degree banking. In 1969, the oval was revised to its current configuration. The track was renamed Bristol International Raceway in 1978. In 1992, the track was repaved entirely in concrete. In 1996, the oval was purchased by Bruton Smith and the name was changed to the current Bristol Motor Speedway.
The dragstrip opened in 1965 under the name Bristol International Dragway. The track ran NHRA events from 1965 through 1967, and AHRA events in 1968-1970. In 1971, Larry Carrier, one of the founding owners of Bristol Dragway, started the IHRA, which was HQ'd in Bristol until 1987, and again from 1989-1997. The dragstrip ran under IHRA sanction from 1971 until 1998. The NHRA returned to Bristol in 1999. Bruton Smith purchased the dragstrip in 1996 and renamed it to the current name, Bristol Dragway.
