North Wilkesboro was an important track on the NASCAR circuit until 1996, when it was purchased by Bruton Smith and Bob Bahre. Their intent was to obtain the two Winston Cup (now Nextel Cup) races for their tracks, Texas Motor Speedway and New Hampshire International Speedway The last race was held in September 1996, and the two owners have no plan to reopen the track for any other form of racing.
