Charlotte Speedway was a 3/4 mile dirt oval located near the current site of the Charlotte Airport.
New: 2006-06-19
Charlotte Speedway opened on June 6th, 1948, operating until approximately November 14th, 1956. It was not the first track to carry the name; previously there had been a 1.25 mile board oval in Pineville that operated from November 25th, 1924 to September 19th, 1927.
A 1/4 mile dirt oval appears to have operated here in 1953.
Charlotte Speedway was the site of the first ever NASCAR 'Strictly Stock' class, which is the ancestor of the modern Nextel Cup series (by way of Grand National and Winston Cup).
