There are sources suggesting that there was racing at Altamont as early as the 30s. The current facility opened as a 1/2 mile dirt oval in 1965. The 1/2 mile oval was paved and the 1/4 mile paved oval was added by July, 1966. The track operated until 1969, and from 1973-1974, 1976-1978, 1980-1983, in 1991, and from 1995. New owners added multiple configurations allowing for a short road course, karting sprint courses, and figure 8 races on the 1/4 mile oval for 2006, and changed the name to Altamont Motorsports Park.
The track has previously operated as Altamont Speedway and Altamont Raceway Park. The track was called Bernal Memorial Raceway in 1982-1983.
