USAC was founded in the aftermath of AAA's departure from the race sanction business in 1955. USAC has focused over the years on Champ Cars/Big Cars (later split into separate Indy Car and Silver Crown variants), Sprints, and Midgets. USAC has also dabbled in stock car racing and road racing at times. USAC ceased sanctioning Indy Cars a year or two after the IRL was created. USAC has been involved in the joint sanction of stage Rallying since the beginning of 2005.
