The NHRA is the largest drag racing sanctioning body in North America.

The NHRA was founded by Wally Parks in 1951 to provide a national sanctioning body for drag racing. From 1970 until 2003, Winston was the title sponsor, in parallel with Winston's title sponsorship of NASCAR Winston Cup racing. Upon Winston's departure, Powerade became the title sponsor for NHRA racing.
NHRA bought NIRA (National Import Racing Association) in 2001 in order to provide competition in the increasingly popular Sports Import category.
